Deathlist and Condolances threads on Ask

Post 1

It appears that some condolence threads are being moved from Ask to the Deathlist Page.

While I would prefer they not be moved at all, I think that that Deathlist is definitely not the place to move them too.

It has been pointed that the Deathlist game offends some people and others feel uncomfortable with it and it is just not generally well subscribed too

The only other place I can think of putting them would be Misc Chat which would be better than on the Deathlist page.

Putting Tony Benn in Misc Chat tho seems all kind of wrong smiley - erm

After careful consideration, Galaxy Babe agreed to host condolence threads on the Deathlist page.

That's the wrong decision. Events such as Benn's death spark lively and fruitful discussions which can spawn creativity. Maybe someone would be inspired to write the guide entry on Tony Benn, for example?

To apply such whimsical restrictions on what people can discuss in the most popular forum is killing the community.

Rubbish, hanging around one particular thread like it's your own precious little world, and then ranting and raving when anyone suggests anything different, like maybe adhering to the rules, is killing the community.

We are the community as well, like it, lump it, or leave.

Pastey, I think have seen you say 'like it or lump it' to three maybe four active researchers in a matter of weeks when you should have ignored one comment and perhaps engage the others in discussion.

I could repeat it Peanut.

This site is for the hundreds of active researchers, not the few. Not even the few who claim to love it and cherish it, but do nothing for it other than moan that it's not how they want it to be.

My simple suggestion is this, if you don't like the site, help to run it, or go run your own.

As for discussion, you might have noticed that the thread that was opened by Icy to discuss things, I'm happy to join in on.

Constructive discussion is great, whining criticism can get lost.

I thought the Deathlist page was for the deathlist game - not catch-all discussions on people who'd died?

I like the DL game, but to those that don't or that are unaware of it, doesn't this seem slightly glib or disrespectful?

I agree that the Deathlist is not the right place for all condolence threads. Some have been opened on that page, but for it to be the standard place for all condolence thread would be the wrong move, as some find the game disrespectful and would never visit the page on principle.

Equally askh2g is not the right place either, as no question was asked, but rather thoughts and memories are encouraged in such threads.

And putting people of significance in Misc Chat seems to be somewhat dismissive of their achivements.

So, would it be advisable to set up a specific h2g2 Condolence page where such condolence threads could be placed? It wouldn't have the stigma of the Deathlist, the inappropriateness of ask, or the dismissiveness of MiscChat, but could be a place researchers could discuss the passing of significant persons at the appropriate time.

What do you think?

I dunno, I think a specific "Condolences" forum seems a bit morbid.

What about some sort of announcements or current events forum?

I like the idea of a specific Condolences/Obits page, yes it seems a *bit* morbid, but death *is* morbid.

The thing to do, is to celebrate the life!

The problem with separate pages is that often people are unaware of them and it doesn't reach a wider audience if there is one which is one of the reasons why they are opened in a forum like ask.

So I think they need to go into an existing forum so if not Ask, then Misc Chat would be the better place for them at this time.

I do feel that Ask at the moment is a better place for the condolences threads that have been set up and they haven't been overwhelming the forum.

I'd prefer a current events forum to an obits page.

I thought the new Lounge would be the place for threads like this when it is set up, so not sure that we would need a separate place for them then

Current events forum would be great. Can we have one of them as well as the Lounge. Are forums really hard to set up?

I think an End Of The Road thread would be interesting.
