There's recently been a new fossil dinosaur discovered, Limusaurus inextricabilis. This very ancient dinosaur has four (not three) digits, but the 'thumb' is very small and basically functionless. In other words, this seems to be a transitional showing that dinosaurs do indeed have digits 2, 3 and 4, even though they have evolved to look like digits 1, 2 and 3 - which is exactly what we see in birds.
