Here's another elementary article (it's probably over the heads of 12-year olds). My reference is Paulo Ribenboim's book "Fermat's Last Theorem for Amateurs". It starts getting juicy on page 355 where Ribenboim develops a probabilistic argument and Klosgen reports empirical results. My probabilistic argument is simpler and fits the data better.
