Recorder Consort Playing

My sister and I used to do that when we were children. Mind, we were never taught how to do consort playing, we just did it. 
Both my sons did this at their music school. They had at least one concert a year with an audience (which mainly consisted of family, friends, and the other eleves).
Son #2 learned to play the trumpet at his school. The school offers wind instrument classes for the first two years.
It was great, but sadly, my son stopped playing after that.
