There appears to be a legitimate medical use for cannabis that it seems unfair to prohibit. It's a 'quality of life' issue in this case. But those who draw comparisons with legal consumption of tobacco should remember that it's only in the past few decades that the public and medical profession at large have been overly concerned about ill effects from cigarettes. Why rush to legalise a substance whose potential negative effects haven't really been studied?
Actually, I don't see much reason for any substance (natural or unnatural) to be illegal, as long as the user uses it intelligently. The same argument could be applied not just to harder drugs but to guns, motor vehicles, and the Internet...
