What does 'order of size' mean?

Constellations

Post 5

Tango

the biggest constellation is '1' and the smallest '88', hope that helps!

I'd never heard of that either.
Have you considered explaining where constellations came from and how they became formally recognized?

I will work on some notes about this tonight and post you tomorrow with the url. smiley - smiley

I've emailed you the text. Change it as you see fit.

Let me know if you need more - maybe I'll tackle the circumpolar constellations next. I didn't include a lot of details about the stars in the constellations, just some of the mythology surrounding them. If you want more scientific stuff, I'll get that together for you also.

Cheers! smiley - smiley

Thanks, the info you gave me _should_ all be up there now.

As the entry says one of the constellations appears to be missing (theres only 87) if you notice which one please tell me!

Corvus is missing.

Maybe you should mention that serpens is divided into two sections that don't touch each other: Serpens cauda and serpens caput.

Ophiuchus is a zodiac constallation, too.smiley - winkeye

I still don't like this 'order of size' thing. A good extension would be the angular size (eg in square degrees).

Keep up the good work!

I agree that the order of size thing is a bit odd. I've never heard of it either. And I can't see what practical purpose that kind of information would have.

Hi,

When I've got something ready to replace the size thing I'll get rid of it!

Thanks for the extra info!

I was thinking about this project the other day and thought it might work best as its own University project.

That was you could break down the sky into different entries - northern circumpolar constellations, northern constellations, constellations of the zodiac, southern constellations, and southern circumpolar constellations.

It might be a lot easier to handle. You'd just need to specify what format you'd want the pages done in.

Just a thought!

And how about 'angular size' rather than the other thing?

Constellations

Post 13

Tango

Thats a very good idea!

I think I might do that, I'll set up an index page for the new project and link to it from the stars index page!

Thanks,
Tango

Was anyone out star-gazing last night?
Hoping for any early Leonids?
I was, it was freezing, but I had a spectacular view of Taurus, Orion, Gemini followed by Leo, then I had to retire before I froze to death.
Sorrowfully tonight, the moon will dim my viewing of the Leonids smiley - cry

If you had a pair of binoculars you could have had good views of Jupiter and Saturn as both are in Taurus at the moment. Jupiter is the bright white 'star' in the V-shaped bit of Taurus and Saturn rises a bit later in the middle of the Pleadies star cluster.

Pity that the next big shower is going to have a pretty bright moon as well. But I can't wait for the X-mas Day eclipse in the US!! smiley - smiley

Sorry for going off-topic Tango. I'll behave and try to do something on the circumpolar constellations before month's end. smiley - smiley

Hi,

Don't worry about going off topic! I find more interesting forums often come from completely unrelated entries!

About the constellations having a project of there own I was thinking of doing a 'constellation tree' like this:

CONSTELLATIONS
/ ¦ N. Circum. N. Zodiac (etc.)
¦ ¦ ¦
(PAGES ON EACH CONSTELLATION)

What do you think, as you say there is enough info!

I'll post the url for the constellation index page as soon as it is sorted out.
