Is the colour orange named after the fruit, or is it vice versa?

And why isn't the colour orange known as carrot? In fact, why aren't oranges and carrots and pumpkins all called oranges (or carrots)?

Wouldn't that get a bit confusing????
Anyway, I wholeheartedly agree that what we percieve to be the colour orange is not, infact, orange, but may very well be an interesting shade of purple, or sometihng else. I may see what I percieve to be the colour orange, yet what I see as orange you may see as my colour red, yet call it orange, even though to me it is red.....
