Talking Point: Why Should We Care About the Environment?

Global Warming

Nowadays, everyone knows that we should care about the environment. But Greenpeace was only founded in 1971 1; public awareness of conservation issues are therefore a relatively recent thing.

Now we know that we're being deliberately contentious here, but can anyone tell us:

  • Why shouldn't we leave the big clean-up to future generations?
  • Won't the hole in the ozone layer just make the planet nice and warm?

  • It's been estimated that we lose one species every hour, but hasn't that been the case since life began? No-one missed the dinosaurs, did they?

  • Is it really worth recycling glass? Don't bottle banks just create useless bottle mountains?

  • The fish and reptiles in the Miami Everglades are changing sex, but does it matter?

  • Landfill sites. Are they a bad thing? Why?

  • Should all countries adopt New Zealand's anti-nuclear stance?

  • The North Sea is being overfished. So should we veto fish fingers?

  • Are genetically modified foods really any worse for you than organic produce? Why?

Do you have any environmental questions that you think should be answered? Now's your chance, ask away...
1 When a group of north American activists hired a battered boat and sailed into the US atomic test zone off Amchitka, Alaska, to protest against nuclear testing. Their names were, Jim Bohlen, Paul Cote, Irving Stowe and Patrick Moore.
