Leaving Me Behind...

The world is spinning
but leaving me behind
I run, chasing to catch up
I am losing my breath
and can't run anymore
Kneeling on the dry pavement
My hands cover my flushed face
Tears mixing with sweat,
Shoulders heaving,
I feel so alone.
In the darkness of night
Only my crying can be heard.
I soon fall asleep
Into a restless dream state
Nightmares running after me
In an endless chase.
A raindrop splashes on my eyelid
And I wake from a tormented sleep
As the rain seeps into my clothes
I slowly get to my feet,
Exhausted from the night's exertions.
Soon the rain completes its course
The clouds part
and a beautiful rainbow greets me
I am glad I'm alive
And I smile
Because the world has never left me
I've been with it the whole time
Only my perception told me different
It told me to not believe those I love
But they still held my hand
And were with me the entire time.
