Not only did I read your bit on Preston, but I popped in here as well, it's another one of our hobbies. We're far from experts, but the slightly worse half (SWH) has been fascinated for years. My particular interest is raptors, and the site of red kites soaring over the valleys near where I come from still can reduce me to tears. On our annual pilgrimage to Aberystwyth recently, SWH was enthralled by a pair of peregrines that seemed to be displaying, off the cliffs, near the town centre.

So this is what you do when not playing at bent coppers!
I liked the article.
A question - do Whimbrels have darker crowns all year round? My field guide doesn't say, just wondered if you knew?

According to SWH, they do keep the crown colouring all year round.

Oh well, maybe it was a curlew then. It seemed smaller, neater, not quite so overbalanced by it's beak. I love seeing curlews but it would be nice to see a whimbrel too.
Thanks both, I'll keep looking.
