I went on holiday to America and was persuaded to partake of a local food treat Pizza... At the restaurant, the 10" pizza sells for $4.99, the restaurant claimed they have a great deal on the large 14" pizza, which is specially priced at $7.34. I still can't work out how much cheaper the bigger pizza was, can you help?

What is the per cent discount the restaurant was offering?

Assuming you work on a 'price per square inch' basis (and that my maths isn't hopelessly inadequate smiley - erm)

OK... I can do that... smiley - winkeye

The area of a circle is 1/2 * Pi * r^2 = 1/8 * Pi * d^2. This means that the pizza with a diameter of 10" has a price of 0.124 $/square inch, whilst the 14" pizza has a price of 0.0931 $/square inch to 3 significant digits.

Thus, if you choose the big pizza, you pay 0.0931/0.124 * 100 = 0.751 to 3 significant digits, and the discount is almost 25%.

I'm sure I got something wrong... smiley - winkeye What do you think?? smiley - smiley

smiley - ok

kelli - ran 2 miles a day for 2012, aiming for the same for 2013

Oh, well in that case I would never have got it! My defective maths brain remembered the formula for the area of a circle as being pi*(r*r), not 1/2*pi*(r*r).

Oh well, smiley - biggrin

Congrats for just getting it! smiley - ok

The formula for the area of a circle is pi.r^2 isn't it smiley - huh It doesn't make any difference to the maths for this question though...

*wanders off mumbling about always being late for the quiz*
