Not as fruity as black tea, but better in many ways for cutting away the the flavor of the sauces and clearing the palate during the course of a meal and actually somewhat more stimulating than black tea.

Usually marketed these days with a small amount of black tea added forthe benifit of people who don't recognize it as tea unless it has a brown color, a formulation I find objectionable.

I wish I could still get the one pound bricks of Tibetan tea I used to be able to get when I was a kid, a black tea variety composed of coarse leaves and stems, cemented together with dried whey solids, the only kind of tea that is supposed to be boiled, traditionally served with yak butter or clarified cow's butter.

Saw some Yerba Mate on the shelves when I was in town shopping yesterday.
