Of course we need an article about this. Brilliant. Couple of thoughts from historical detail - I remember reading about wooden wheels which predate the Mesoptamian blue prints - could easily dig out this info - also, thought it might be worth mentioning the apparently independent and parallel invention of the wheel in meso-America, (where as far as I know, it was never used for transport). Let me know if you want me to go hunting for anything.
