I don't think I've ever seen the Sun with no sunspots at all. Is there an explanation?

Yes, Sun spot activity goes in cycles of about 11 years and we're currently at the minimum stage. It seems to be an unusually inactive and lengthy minimum with long runs of days without any sunspots, then when they do form they dissipate quickly and never amount to much.

If you look at http://www.spaceweather.com they've started keeping a running total of spotless days under the picture that would show the position of sunspots if there were any.
