Where do the "Three lions on my shirt" come from?
And was his name really William Longespee? Needed a dandelion rather than a lion on his shield if that was the case

The three lions are an English heraldic device, so I guess that they get it from that. The article says that it was Richard I who first had the threee lions as a royal seal (1198).
Perhaps he thought it was a dandy lion.

It's not just the footie who use it, the English Cricket Board also use the three lions. Rugby doesn't, they use a red rose and white shirts (white shirts for a rugby team, who thought of that ). I guess the cricket can't really use a red rose for England as one of the counies already uses that device.

Until quite recently the English footie strip was white and I seem to remember Leeds United (at the time one of the dirtiest teams you could hope to meet) doing likewise.

I thought the England Football strip was still white and the reverse strip was red.
