They made us play this at drama club at school and it was great fun. I'm not too good at explaining it though. Does it make sense at all?

It does make sense. I loved playing that game...

Perhaps you could point out that the something should be passed as quickly as possible, if you don't think thats too obvious...

But I was kind of lost on what to call the something..

In my theatre group, we called the "something" the "focus," as in "passing the focus." It seemed appropriate.

Also, we used slightly different terms. A "Zoom" was what you call "Zap," in that the focus is passed to anyone not adjacent to you, except that at no time can a person who received a "Zoom" give another "Zoom." A "Schwartz" is what you call "Boing," in that the focus returns to whoever passed it to you.

A "Zip" is called "Profligliano." Since it's so easy to pass the focus to people next to you, it makes sense to make the passing word a long, difficult to prounounce word.

Also, we had another similar game called "Zip Zap Zop," but it was simpler. Instead of there being restrictions on who to pass to, you can point to anyone you want and say, "Zip." That person points to anyone and says, "Zap," and the next person says, "Zop." Completely mindless, it makes your reaction time faster because you don't have to decide what to say next.
