A Conversation for The Ultimate Guide to the London Underground - mark II

Tube Tip:Euston/King's Cross to Basildon/Tilbury

Underground boy

If you have come from a mainline train at this point, you may have lots of luggage. The simplest way to go here is if you arrive at Euston station, walk to Euston Square station. From either Euston Square or King's Cross, board a Hammersmith and City line train. Hopefully, it will be going all the way to Barking - if it does, you only have to walk across the platform to get on the mainline train you need. However, sometimes Hammersmith and City line trains terminate at Whitechapel - if you end up on a train terminating at Whitechapel, change at Aldgate East, remain on the same platform and take a District Line train to Barking. When you reach Barking, exit the train to the right - sometimes you can exit from the train on either side. Note: If you use Fenchurch Street station, you will have a walk from Tower Hill station. If you change to the mainline train at West Ham or Upminster, you will have to climb stairs.

If you are on a Hammersmith and City line train that terminates at Whitechapel and you get off at Whitechapel station, would you have to walk up or down stairs or anything if you then want to take a District Line train further eastwards?

If you are doing this journey in reverse and change at Barking, you end up opposite the westbound District line platform. Hammersmith and City line trains that terminate at Barking will leave from a different platform, which is some distance from the District Line platform. I suggest you ignore the Hammersmith and City line platform here, take the forst available District Line train and change at Aldgate East onto the Hammersmith and City line (the destination shown will either be Hammersmith via King's Cross or Hammersmith via Shepherd's Bush). Be prepared, however, to wait a fairly long time at Aldgate East for a Hammersmith and City Line train (When I did this journey last time to take a mainline train from Euston, I got to Aldgate East on a District Line train, and there were two more District Line trains after the train I had been on that came in to the platform before a Hammersmith and City Line train).
