Bars- Where To Drink In Leeds : MOJO
Created | Updated Mar 4, 2005
Mojo is one of the greatest treasures Leeds has to offer and a must see for anyone travelling through or resident in the city. It is located on the east side of the city on a quiet and once secluded side street which, during Mojo s five year life, has undergone regeneration and has slowly become the location for several night spots, restaurants and a couple of clubs (Atrium and Heaven and Hell). Indeed Mojo is one of a very, very few city centre bars to be regarded as a local and have the required pack of fiercely loyal, but amiable regulars, ranging from the famous to the infamous of both local and celebrity status.
The Independent, the broardsheet daily newspaper, said of Mojo ... they look after you, its a fun place to be, and they make great cocktails , and ranked it 50th in their recent article 'The Top 50 Bars In The World', beating all but the most well established of the larger, London based, British competition into the list. Once you have entered its small but perfectly formed interior ... it is easy to see why.
The atmosphere is charged with Rock n' Roll and a neon legend firmly claims the 'Music For The People'. The walls are adorned with icons of music immortalised in elegantly framed black and whites and the bar has a rich dark wood appearance lending it a distinct American retro vibe. Its back bar is crammed with such a truly inspiring range of liquor, (some bottles you ll recognise, many you won't) that it is hard to find a drink that could not be mixed here.
Their menu lists 70+ cocktails and requests are always welcomed (the bartenders will always pull one out of the hat if you're feeling stuck), along with bottled beers, wines and 'softies'. Cocktails are priced from £2-20 for shots to £4-80 for the hardcore classics. Draught beer however is unavailable, cementing the gap between bar and pub. If you're out for the night begin with a bottle of beer and peruse the menu. Start with something light, a Sloe Gin Fizz or a Sour, then head straight for a Twisted Sobriety (one of The Doctor s creations) or a classic Martini (their Polish Martini is really excellent) to get the evening moving . The only downside to this perfect bar is the lack of food, but that said though, the quality of the drinks and the choice cuts of music are food enough- for the soul.
The standard of bartending and mixology here is of the highest order, and it is a pleasure to talk with them and watch them at work, but beware! Professionals at work. As head bartender Mal 'the doctor' Evans once said, "We're real bartenders who serve real drinks and play real music". So don t be offended if, when requesting your favourite bit of Madonna or Steps, you get a funny look. You re in the presence of passionate people, who are very passionate about what they do. Music is given equal importance to the liquor and, frankly, the best way to hear your favourite Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Dylan or Marley, Stone Roses, R.E.M., Oasis, Verve (you get the picture) track is .... well, is not to ask at all. If it's a good tune, then you can guarantee that it's already on that evening's play list.
Mojo really is a bar where you re always glad you came. Let the bartenders welcome you in, leave reality and the cell phone at the door, make yourself feel at home, order your poison; kick back, relax and enjoy the tunes .... you're guaranteed a great night in.
