okay .. I'm going to try out this Peer Review thing
(hope Im doing this right)
This is the artcle Published in the Trent University callander as a Guide promo, and I have gotten some good feedback on it from people Ive talked to so I thought I might as well throw it up here and see what you think.
I like it because it is both fun and informative.

Apart from the fact that the entry doesn't state upfront that this Peterborough is in Ontario (as opposed to the English one), I loved it. Top marks.

Hello,
I think it's lots of fun. I'll keep it in mind if I ever find myself in Peterborough.
I'm just curious about something. You say that this an article published in the Trent university calendar as a Guide promo. Is it an ad for this Guide? Or is it for something else?
Yours,
Jake

Thanks for reminding me, Jake...
Beeblefish, I assume you wrote this and you still own copyright, despite it having been in the mag?
As long as that's covered, you're OK to bring it here too.

Oh yes, it is a Guide promo .. and it was actually published in the Guide first .. so the Guide has the rights ...

Right, I'm not gonna touch any copyright issues with a proverbial bargepole (because I'll probably be wrong, as per usual).

The entry's well-written and witty, with some really nice ideas. However, I think it suffers a little from 'neither... nor...' syndrome, in that the first paragraph atempts to extend the entry to encompass similar activities in other places. It would be better if you limited the scope to cover just the budget self-created entertainments to be found in Peterborough, or mention in the appropriate sections how these activities can be adapted to other locales (ie any cafés will do, or any stretch of non-privately-owned river that isn't too cold for the pirates thing, for instance).
Hope this helps!

Hi!
This one is an interesting read, but I definitely agree with NexusSeven on the focus issue. Are you still interested in pursuing Peer Review with this one?

On the subject of nitpicking and editing, I will do little other than say, "Great job, I love it!"
Just thought I'd let you know that I may just have to gather a band of people and try some of the things you've suggested. I'll let you know beforehand, in case you're interested, and I'll take pictures
Again, great job.

As this was a showpiece article advertising the Guide I don't want to change it. I still think its a good article as is, and worthy of the Edited Guide, but if you think it will never be picked out of PR then Sin Bin it, as the workshop would be futile (see first point).
The thing is that changing it in either direction (ie making it specifically Peterborough or completely general) would ruin the point of the article. And I like the article.

I have to agree with N7 - perhaps the solution would be to make a copy of this entry for the promo thing and because you like it as is - and make another copy to try and get into the Edited guide? That was you could have your and eat it...

Beeblefish, your splendid opus will now be sent to a sub editor. When they return it to h2g2 Towers - usually it takes about four weeks - the article will feature on the front page and your life will never be the same again When this happens you will be sent an email informing you of the happy event. Well done.
