which came first the chicken or the egg?

Well this depends on whether you believe in the theory of evolution. If you don't, we're still supposing aren't we. But if you do believe in evolution the answer is very simple. The egg came first.
Chickens had to evolve from an earlier species of galliform (fowl). All birds lay eggs, therefore the egg was laid by the non-chicken who ended up with a deformed chick by their standards which was the chicken we now know (of which there are may breeds).
However if you require a little further proof of this, birds are not the only animals which lay eggs, so do reptiles and 3 species of mammals.
And I assume we are talking the cleidoic egg here, after all, any other would be existing back amoungst invertebrates.
Forgive me for being a scientific, arrogant, know-it-all! Thank you.
