I'm sure I recall reading once that, if the whole substance of the Earth were to diappear, its main features would still be visible due to the presence of bacteria, which are able to noccupy every possible ecological niche. Wish I could remember where I read it - could it have been in one of John Postgate's works?

That is a fascinating thought, my husband will love that one, he'll probably go off and write a short story about it. Thanks for sharing it Big Al.
Bacteria definately dominate this planet and probably don't even acknowledge our existance, just invade us instead. If you remember where you read that, please let me know, I had never heard about it before.
