A Conversation for Volunteer to be a Guru
I would rather like to be a Guru

I too would like to volunteer to be a Guru. I think I know the site pretty well already, and would love to know more about what makes it actually tick.
I am also excessively well aquainted with the hitch-hikers books - not sure how much that helps, but anyway, and spend a pretty large amount of time onsite, even when I am meant to be doing my dissertation - I would have left it until after I had completed that before volunteering, but I heard a rumour you were recruting recently, and I have been thinking about volunteering here for quite some time now - even read the entire FAQ at one point a few months ago, to see how much of it was news to me.
I would be better at the technical side of being a guru rather than editorial questions I should think, and would be very interested in keeping an eye on things over at 360 as well as here on hootoo.

Hi vogonpoet, I'll be recruiting Gurus later this week, so watch this space.
Thanks for volunteering.

Hey Linda, is there anywhere in particular I should keep an eye out for? If I try keeping an eye out over at How Do I?, Don't Panic, and the Welcome Page far starters is that cool, or is there anywhere at the moment with relatively sparse guru covereage I should look out for?

That's great. There should be plenty for you to cover there.
I'd suggest subscribing to the Community Soapbox as well though, simply because some very good questions about h2g2 have come up there in the past. There have also been some Posts there that are more suitable to Ask h2g2, so a gentle prompt from a Guru would be nice.
Thanks. I hope you're enjoying being a Guru so far.

*Runs risk of sounding terribly self absorbed, but isnt really, honest *
Whilst looking over the membership list of the newsgroup to see which other researchers were Gurus, I couldnt help but notice the discrepancy between the number of people on the email list and the number of Gurus available from the volunteers drop down.
There are 64 members, minus five italics making 59 Gurus, and only 47 on the volunteer drop down list - GreyDesk and many others, inlcuding myself obviously, are missing, so I was jsut wondering how often the volunteer lists get updated.
Oh, and meanwhile - would I have been better off putting this onto the Guru egroup, that presumably being what they are for?

I would suggest that you use the email list for two reasons.
No one ever sends it any email.
And if I've unsubscribed from a thread I won't see your query. As it happens, I didn't unsubscribe.
Thanks for mentioning the volunteer list, it should be updated very soon.

I have to admit, I kind of thought that the emails would come in rather more regularly.. oh, and I popped over to your space to make sure I could still see this conversation

It's a good idea to check - I personally don't unsubscribe very often from conversations on my space, but some of the generic accounts do. Starting new conversations definitely get you noticed.
By the way, the list should be ok now.
