A Conversation for The Wessex Researchers Group
Talking about Kent being part of Wessex
coelacanth Started conversation Aug 26, 2002
I was thinking I'd have to become an only an honorary member of the Wessex Researchers when I move out of Hampshire next week. However, I've done a bit of research and it seems that Kent was also part of Wessex. For example http://www.angelcynn.org.uk/kings.html
Can Kent be included on the page?

Although it is true that after 860 AD Kent became a part of the Kingdom of Wessex, before then it was a seperate kingdom. And anyway, by the reign of Edgar the Peaceable in the middle of the 10th Century the Kingdom of Wessex ruled the whole of the Kingdom of England anyway, so by that rule all of England would be in the "Wessex Researcher Group", as well as most of Wales and part of Scotland, which I feel would be getting a little out of hand.
As, like me, you have lived in Hampshire, you are welcome to stay part of the Wessex Researchers Group - at the moment I'm staying 300 miles away from Wessex, so distance doesn't mean anything , but I feel I have to draw the line somewhere, and that Kent, like Sussex, is probably on the other side of it.

We couldn't stage an invasion then?

If you find enough people in Kent to form an invasion force, why not start a Kent Researcher's Group? I definately think that Researcher Groups are a good idea - the more the merrier. If you do, I'll give you a hand.

It's going to be a pretty geriatric invasion force from Kent then! Me, vegiman (in his 50's) and Also Ran (wheelchair bound and in her 70's).
Go on - let us be part of Wessex.

I was thinking that Wessex could invade Kent, then coely and AR1 would be in Wessex after all.

If you get 5 or more people from Kent posting in this thread asking to be members of the Wessex Researchers Group, then yes, Kent can be part of Wessex. (And Sussex too...)
So far:
1.) Coelacanth

Oooh! I like a challenge!
* back*
Could you define "from Kent" please? Do you mean living in Kent, or born in Kent, or anyone who has ever lived in Kent.....
(born in S London and has, in chronological order lived in London, Kent, Essex, Middlesex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and Kent)

I'd define it as anyone who is or has lived in Kent for a substantial amount of time. Even I've stayed in Kent for 3 days - but that sort of thing doesn't count.

Oh come on, let coely be a member, we can't leave her stuck in Kent with no one to talk to.
I go over to Kent fairly regularly visiting places like Hever Castle and Chartwell.
If it supports her request, I lived there for 3 years at a stretch.

Coelacanth is a member - she has lived in Hampshire afterall - it's whether to include Kent as part of Wessex that we're arguing. And so far we have 2:
1.) Coelacanth
2.) Cærwynn
so find me 3 others - there's no time limit. You mentioned Vegiman - get him to post here then

I was born in Kent and lived there for most of my life, until moved us to Hampshire of course. Now we're moving back I'd like to see Kent included in the Wessex researchers group please!
