You were right- the Official Guide entry got edited into a different tone than the original intent. Kind of reminds me of the way editing is talked about in the literary, Ursa Minor publication, particularly the issue reguarding the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal eating tourists.
I'm a Washington State native, but I recently spent a week in NC- I saw one of these Waffle eateries, and mentioned to my friend, "hey, I've never seen a Waffle house before... we just have IHOP..."... and she assured me that I did not want to go eat at the Waffle place.
