I'd always thought that Venom and Slayer were credited as to inventing thrash/speed metal. But these three bands all started playing choons round about the same time ('81) so I guess all three are to be thanked.
Me? I prefer Slayer. Ain't checked out Venom, and can't stand Metallica because, like Nirvana, everybody loves 'em.
Iron Maiden rock 'em all though. Bottom line. But they don't thrash.

I generally never credit genre inventions to one band. It will always be many/a few bands doing the same thing at the same time. Besides, who's to say that nobody thought of it before?
Cheers for those notes
