While catching up with some backlog, the MP list said I had 23 posts to view on F2118817"?thread=645062&show=20&skip=780#pi797
Yet going to that thread link (in brunel skin) showed just the remaining posts on that page, with the blobs for other pages ending in the white one for F2118817

That happens all the time 
If you go ack to your PS after having read the last posts on the page, it shows you the remaining posts, though, so when you click on them, it takes you to the latest page. Or, in case you remember there is a next page, you can click on the downwards arrow of the last post

No, it doesn't. Or at least it didn't and it still doesn't on other threads. The 800 post break on that one could indicate a new magic number mis-applied by the programmers while trying to prevent the ongoing server crashes.
