At the end of this entry it says:

>>Dori Sanders, the famous novelist, not only has been known to sell her family's peaches there, but also to offer insightful and often lyrical information on the subject of peaches in general.<<

Could you change the link, please? It seems to be going to something in Hindi or Tamil.

Here's a link you could use about Dori Sanders: http://www.southernfoodways.org/interview/dori-sanders/

I never knew peaches were grown in Georgia, or anywhere in the US - I always assumed Morocco, Spain and South Africa (where they have the benefit of not needing to change their watches when transported to the UK, though it is the seasonal opposite).

Mind you, is it true that common fruits such blackcurrants are unknown in the US?

Mostly they're unknown - they were banned until fairly recently because they host a blight that threatens white pines. I think they've found a way around that now.

We have a lot of other berries, though.

Yeah, the peach crop is an important one in the US.

Well, if everywhere was exactly the same it'd make a very dull smiley - earth, but it would be difficult to live without blackcurrants.

I just read that the popularity of blackcurrants in the UK comes from the Second World War when, with the unavailability of oranges in the UK, they were promoted as an alternative source of vitamins.

Funny how war changes diets by necessity, making Italians eat hazelnuts with chocolate to create Nutella and the Coca Cola company creating Fanta for the Nazis...

It's a funny old world, isn't it? smiley - laugh I was just reading yesterday about the Feigenson Brothers, Russian immigrant bakers who invented Faygo soft drinks in Detroit in 1907. It was a local brand until the sport team they sponsored got broadcast nationally - now it's a national brand.

Then there's Afri-Cola, from Cologne. Founded in 1931, has a palm tree on it and lots of caffeine inside. I can't stand the stuff, myself. I always laughed because their slogan was 'Alles ist in Afri-Cola.' I'd say, 'Yeah, everything's in there: sugar, spice, caffeine, old rubber tires...' smiley - island
