A Conversation for Topic of the Week: Starting a Band

Naturally Argumentative

My first band was with a bunch of school friends. None of us could play instruments particularly well and no-one had high expectations. We just messed about, had fun writing songs and got better and better. After a while we were all at least competant on the instruments (despite the amount we insulted the bassist) and the songs were quite good.

As for gigging, just ask people. Ask your friends in bands or people who work in bars. Also, send out demos if you have them. Eventually someone will put you on.

Failing that, put on your own gig. Hire a room, print up some posters and get another band or two then bring everyone you know down. This is what we did and played our first gig in front of 200 people who we knew and so we felt relaxed.
