"Lucy?"
She heard a voice in the distance, she shot back to reality and her eyes flickered open.
"You okay?"
Hunched over her, clutching her body close was a young man. He was tall, and had dark wavy hair, blue eyes and a scar below his left eye. His eyes were filled with concern and a glimmer of passion, it was Jack, her childhood friend.
She smiled, feebly.
"Yeah, I'm fine. What are we doing down here?"
She was led on the floor, her memory of what had happened was hazy at best. She was younger than Jack, but only just. The two of them had gone to school together, they'd known each other since pre-school. Jack had a warm, caring personality, he was smart, funny and had the ability to make her forget all about the worries of the night.
Jack smiled.
"You passed out, not remember?"
"So you came running like my knight in shining armour? How noble!"
He blushed. She loved to tease him, it was too easy. Ever since they were young, she'd known that he was attracted to her. She used to catch him staring at her across the classroom at school, although he'd never admit to it. Jack helped her upright, they were in a sprawling shopping mall, the type she'd frequented as a teen. It was eerily empty, silent save for the low, incessant, groan coming from outside. Reality came flooding back, Lucy knew exaclty where she was.
---
The pair walked through the deserted complex, the shops were dark and empty, abandoned. There hadn't been a chance to check, but the mall seemed like a safe place, an escape from the madness that surrounded it. Lucy stopped, they were standing in front of the large glass entrance, rain poured down the surface like a waterfall. The outside world was blurred, several shapes shuffled around the entrance. A dark silhouette was pressed up against the doors, pounding on the glass.
"What are they doing?"
Jack shook his head.
"I don't know."
"Do they know we're in here?"
"Maybe. We were careful but maybe one of them saw us and followed us here."
Lucy walked over to a bench and sat down. She shuddered, the thought of what was lurking outside was horrid.
