OK. I've added the pronunciation of Gyros to the entry.

I thought meze was turkish rather than greek - could be wrong though. They may be a feature of both greek and turkish food.

Gnomon, if they are a common greek food isn't it better to add them to the entry now rather than hope somebody comes along later and updates it?

It would be nice to write a complete and accurate guide to Greek food. But unfortunately, mezzes are something I know nothing about. I would rather be accurate than complete. I'll do some research on the matter, but at most I'll add a brief mention of them.

If somebody else knows all about mezzes, then I'll happily accept a contribution from them and make them a joint author.

Nope. But I do know that "eating out" is a naughty euphanism (that's spelled wrong, isn't it?) in the USA; we usually refer to "dining out" when we're speaking of food.

However, it DOES pique one's interest in the article ... smiley - laugh

Mezedes (as they are correctly known in the plural smiley - winkeye) are, properly speaking, an imported Arab tradition - inhereited via the Ottoman Empire. (Their great legacy - along with long padded chests for the storage of bed linen).

I think that in this context it would be sensible to add that it is quite acceptable not to order a big, main dish, but a collection of the various 'starters' you mentioned instead. In fact (and you may need to confirm this) - I don't think the Greeks follow the starters-maincourse-dessert pattern. You might order a big Stifado - or you might order a collection of mezedes.

The Lebanese do the best mezzes. The way to order is 'just keep bringing me stuff until I tell you to stop'.

Thanks, Edward. I'll try and get something along those lines into the entry. But not tonight. I'm busy.

The same in any Indian restaurant worth its salt, of course. You shouldn't feel pressured into ordering a main course. It's culturally acceptable to order a whole bunch of starters and sides. A handy tip for vegetarians!

I checked a book on Middle Eastern cookery this morning. The Mezzes idea is pretty prevalent throughout the region. The author speaks of a bet with a Lebanese restaurant who boasted that he could supply 200 mezzes for a meal. When they turned up at his restaurant, they found a banquet table laden with dishes. But the restaranteur apologised and conceded the bet: he'd only managed 175 dishes.

(Not the famous Claudia Roden book, btw - although that's an excellent book. It's a battered, ex-library book by an Armenian writer).

I love greek foods, this is lovely, although I had a thought. Is it worth giving a few ideas of nice places to actually eat out? Place names, restaurant names etc? Fair enough knowing HOW to eat in Greece, but what about a little on WHERE to? Otherwise, tasty Entry smiley - winkeye

Just about every Greek village has a restaurant and many of them are delightful. I don't think I could list them all!

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
