Clyde, New Jersey - The Ghost of a Ghost Village
Created | Updated Apr 2, 2005
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
- Shelley
If you look at a map of Franklin Township, in Somerset County, New Jersey, you will see an area marked with the name "Clyde". This, as far as the State of New Jersey is concerned, is a local name associated with the township, and indistinguishable from it. But once upon a time, there was a village here, situated just about where the Conrail railroad tracks cross Clyde Road. There are no old houses or other buildings left, nor any trace of the railroad station. The road name is the only memento. Clyde is now no more than the ghost of a ghost village. Nothing beside remains.
