Summer

Pearlescent haze blurs the horizon
No breath of air stirs leaf or hair
Thick dust, dun and dreary, chokes roadside weeds
Nettles and docks, plantains and thistles
Droop in the dry oppressive heat
Pollen beetles from fading rape
Drawn resistless to yellow T-shirts
Dozy bees crawl on wilting fox gloves
An exhausted thrush, wings hung limp
Stands panting on a gate post, feathers ruffled
Summer saps the will, energy dissolves
Waiting for the rain
