How true, how true.
Who can ever forget the free balloon pinned to the cover of one of the very early editions (no. 3 I think) or the free diary printed on a single piece of very small paper (no. 4?). Back in those days it was printed on really tatty paper, was sold in only a few places in the Toon and you could get ejected from your local pub for reading one (well, from certain pubs in Whitley Bay anyway)
Gone are the glory days when Biffa would announce that he was 'Gannin doon the park to clout someone in the moosh' and Fatha would exhort him to 'gie the b*****d one from me son'
How about Paul Wicker, Eric the Cleric and Pat Berger, the fat verger planning a raid on the NatWest bank cos Barlary's was just tooooo risky. Pure class.
And no wallow in the nostalgia of Viz would be complete without mention of Skinheed.
Oh yes. it was funnier way back in 1979/1980.

It may have declined a little and slowly transformed from messy black ink on corporation bogroll to a well-presented almost-magazine but Viz is certainly still worth buying. Most of the frankly unfunny strips don't appear any more (Paul Whicker?), Buster Gonad has only been in once in the past five years and Billy the Fish only occasionally appears whenever the author feels the need to poke fun at another professional footballer's haircut. Whether or not the letters are genuine they still have an almost Private Eye feel to them (without the flouncy language and smugness) and enough of the strips are tolerably pisstaking to warrant at least a laugh at each.
Please ignore the article long enough to buy and try if you haven't already. Even if you think Viz is a peurile comic for adults who should know better you must admit it's the best of those available.
