I guess we, the former inhabitants of this wonderful place called Get Writing, will be left forever wondering why the decision was really made to slam the door on such an array of talent and initiative. Where people swapped ideas and supported each other. Long lasting friendships were made and new talents discovered. Where story lines were discussed and improved on and more experienced writers supported their less experienced contemporaries.

However each person on the Get Writing site has probably told a number of people about the uniqueness of the Get Writing site. How it inspired them kept them company, kept them sane, kept them focused, gave them support and lifted them up. How it provided groups and individuals with stimulus and learning, interaction and tuition. The Get Writing site is a valuable and rare resource with abundant room for growth provided by access to famous authors and readings from all over the world. Tales of different lives lived and different takes and perspective on this mortal coil. And those people being told that the site is closing, in the same breath, look in disbelief how could such a decision have been made?

When somewhere, everywhere in the world, someone is trying to inspire a fraction of what the Get Writing owners have dismissed so contemptuously. Teachers of the young writers of the future, community project workers, people who work with people with mental illnesses, people who work with people with disabilities, all try to encourage empower and build up confidence in the people they work with. Mentoring and encouraging, researching, critiquing and exploring new initiatives, and above all trying to encourage community and support.

Maybe it was a new broom who thinks that the act of squashing the Get Writing site under their corporate jack boot will somehow stamp their mark. But the permanent mark it will leave in many people's minds is one of lack of foresight, vision, initiative and perception. This is a mark of profound absence of understanding and perception regarding the truly unique and wonderful gem they really had in Get Writing. A mark that's akin to one a Tom cat makes when pi$$ing in the wind!
