I think it should be that 'dogs harrassed and nipped and urged their owners to get out of the house'

Odd too!
I have appeared two times , both times in very bad writing form! There is a Christmas story a few years back that has a horrendous number of mistakes in one paragraph.
I am not always that sloppy but far too often, for sure!

When I copied that, I thought it strange. I imagined "nipping" the dog meant pinching it, although it seemed strange that an owner would have to encourage a to get out of harm's way.
