Chester in Welsh is "Caerlleion Fawr" which translates roughly as Great Legion Fort.
It is referred to in day-to-day speech as "Caer" (Fort) which is an indication of its historical importance. In the same way in English, Chester does not need to be specially identified unlike the other Chesters and Cesters - Manchester, Chesterfield, Leicester, Gloucester, etc.
