A Conversation for Specialised Words

Crossover

Post 1

Svlad Cjelli

The word crossover has grown to become the most important one in the muscial industry. After all the really good words were used, rock, pop, country, blues, classical, rap, heavy metal and, even, hip hop, the musical industry, or at least the musical press, suddenly came to a creative halt. They hadn't got a clue what they should call something that sounded different from rock in a kind of hip hopish way, so they took the word 'crossover' into use. Then off course they had come up with the solution and within years everyone were going about speaking of crossover-this and crossover-that. After a while they took other words in use, but it was still crossover - trip hop was a cross between hip hop and tripping acid, or rather what hip hop would sound like if Jerry Garcia made it. Acid house, chewing gum pop, indie rock (which is a cross between the fight of indiependence as seen in a few Eastern European countries and in some rural areas of Wales AND rock) and so forth.
These days it is not a question wether or not something is a crossover or not, but what it is a crossover between.
