'Specific' Meaning 'per kilogramme' is used often in physics. For instance Specific Heat Capacity is the Heat Capacity Per Kilogramme.
My favorite demonstration of this word was when my Teacher (alledgedly) apealed to his bank manager that his specific debt was in fact only £5. Being not the lightest of interlectuals This added up to a fair bit, but never the less fooled the non-scientific bank manager!!

In the Peta's Pecks thing it says that 'Science borrows words from every-day language'! Errr... I think it's the other way round.
