The Birmingham Rock Scene
Created | Updated Sep 21, 2005
With Birmingham being the orignal home of Bands Such as Black Sabbath, you may be wondering what the Birmingham Rock Scene is like... Well here we go.
Pubs
Scruffy Murphys
The hardest thing to work out about Scruffy Murphys is how the hell the Irish themed pub became part of the Birmingham Rock Scene.
Scruffy Murphys is located in Dale End in the City Centre, just down the road from the Academy, and is open from 11pm till 11pm Monday-Thursday, 11am-2am Friday-Saturday, and 2pm - 10:30pm Sundays.
This pub plays a variety of music, ranging from the Eagles to Led Zeppelin, Metallica, And Disturbed. This music is chosen by the bar staff who are working at the time, but if you ask them to put something specific on, they normally don't have a problem.
The staff are friendly, and know how to pour a good pint of guinness... essential for any Irish Pub!
The Costermongers
The Costermongers (also known as simply "Costers") is an underground pub below the Priory Square Complex (Which includes The Costermongers, Scruffy Murphys, Carling Academy 1 and 2, and The Oasis Market)
This pub is open from 12pm-11pm Monday-Thursdays, 12pm-12am Fridays and Saturdays, and 7:00pm - 11:00pm on a sunday
Music is courtesy of a Juke Box, which is £1 for 5 songs, and includes a large range of music choice (ranging from Eminem and the Darkness to Pearl Jam and Coal Chamber), or, when noone has put any money into the Jukebox, the TV Takes over, which is usually tuned into Kerrang! TV (There are also DJs on certain nights)
Costers has a pool table, where the rule is "winner stays on", and a lot of the regulars are to be found around the pool table, either Playing or watching
The Pub also boasts a large prpjection TV, where Most "important" football matches are played, though some are muted with the jukebox playing over the top
The staff are friendly, and mostly female, so there's some good eye candy while you're propping up the bar waiting for one of them to serve you
The Gallows
The Gallows is more of a "pre-club" pub. Situated underneath Edwards No. 8, it is open Thursdays - Saturdays, from 7pm (3pm saturdays) - 11pm
From 7pm, there is a DJ in the gallows, who play a diverse range of music based on what people are requesting
The Gallows is a HUGE pub, and only the bar at the front of the pub is normally used. It boasts 2 Pool Tables and 2 Wide Screen TVs (though no sky/Cable) there is plenty of seating space, and lots of little TVs all around the room playing random Music Videos
The Staff are friendly, yet seem to come and go often, plus, the bar is usually busy and you may spend a while at the bar waiting to be served

The Carling Academy and The Carling Academy 2
This is a massive club, and when I say massive I mean massive. Boasting a total of 5 bars between the 2 venues (which are interconnected) This has to be one of the biggest clubs :D
The Carling Academy is usually used for Gigs, and recently such bands as Motorhead, Sepultura, and Machinehead have played there, however, 2 nights a week, it turns into a venue for a lcub night
The biggest night @ The Carling Academy has to be Sub Culture, with it's "must dance" music, relativerly cheap alcohol and huge dancefloor, It makes a great night out
Not so popular, but still normally rammed to the Gills is Ramshackle, a more, indie/alternative night than subculture is

Snobs
Snobs are a venue with drink prices that you cant argue at (50p a shot of vodka, etc etc) however, recently, it has been truing to drag more people in by playing softer stuff, none of the must dance tracks, and shoving some bangra/RNB in for good luck every now and then. Also Boasting a new night "bringing back mondays"
Nights out
Deranged @ 9Bar
Deranged @ 9bar is the place to be on a wednesday night! With awesome DJs and drink prices that are not to be missed, it's worth going to - you won't be sorry!
50p shot of vodka, 85p Bottle of stella/Carlsberg!
Located @ 9bar on Broad St (just after the McDonalds)
Cult Club @ HQ
Bought to you by the people who bought you subculture! What more can be said?!
The Cult Club has three rooms each playing a different kind of music and the music will be more underground in each room meaning you'll hear a lot more of newer bands, more eclectic tunes and
stuff that we don't play at SUBCULTURE.
