In the Army, we were given condoms to put over the barrels of our rifles to keep water, mud and other forest debris from going down the barrel. Of course, it also made a good cover story for why the Army needed to buy so many condoms as the other (and more widely used reason was for the sexual details outlined above) wouldn't have been good public relations.
Senator: General, why does the Army need 200 million condoms?
General: We use them on field operations to keep the barrels of our weapons clear sir. *wink, wink*
