Sorry to disappoint you guys, but h2g2 runs on NT Server.

and are you happy with that???

[but then, I'm partial to penguins, myself]

Yes, I'm happy with that. We've had no problems, and our uptime has been excellent so far.

well then, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, isn't it? Those what are happy with wot they got should stick with it.

The interesting thing is that on the net you hardly can tell what platform is involved, yet we slaver and caper about which is better.

The one that is better is the one you are using, as long as it works.

It has? (uptime been excellent?) Hm. Maybe those are intended outages that I seem to run into at 12-2am US Eastern time then. Do you do some maintenance at 5am your time occasionally? Or is that your backbone provider's problem/maintenance?

Heh, it's really pointless to quibble about platforms for web serving. The only person that matters to (aside from just speed-wise) is the person doing the admin for the server. It's pretty invisible on this end. I woudn't know if you were serving on NT, some vareity of Unix, etc. just from looking.

Are you sure that's not transatlantic downtime? Because if the servers went down regularly at that time I'd definitely know about it, because I'd be the one restarting them.

Can you give me any dates where you've seen this happen? And can you get to any of the other TDV web sites at the same time? (like www.tdv.com) If you can't then it's probably our ISP. If you can, then it's probably server problems.

I can check the logs and see quite easily if there are gaps in usage at particular times.

Me? I'm not sure of anything. smiley - winkeye

I suppose it could be any of those. I'm just thinking I noticed a rough correlation in the time frame when things have been out, around the same time on a few different occasions. I'm not sure, but I think most if not all those times all TDV sites were out.

*sigh* - then it's ISP trouble, since most of our other sites run on Linux boxes, and take it from me, we're not going to schedule maintenance at midnight smiley - smiley Strange as it may seem, morning (around 9-11am) is the lowest usage time, so that's when we'd be doing any maintenance.
