Where did you get the idea that Sagittarius is Cheiron from, anyway, Shagbark? Is it just a personal theory of yours? All the references I can find give Sagittarius as Crotus.

here is what I get from the encyclopedia mythologia
Chiron
by Micha F. Lindemans
Originally, Chiron was a Thessalian god of healing, but in later Greek mythology he survived as one of the centaurs. Unlike the others of his race, Chiron was wise and had an extensive knowledge of the healing arts. He had been the tutor of, among others, Asclepius, Theseus, and Achilles. When he was accidentally hit by a poisonous arrow shot by Heracles, Chiron relinquished his immortality (in favor of Prometheus) in order to escape the pain by dying. After his death he became the constellation of Sagittarius. Chiron is regarded as a son of Cronus and Philyra.

By the way, there's now a constellation diagram for Bootes and Corona Borealis together. When your Corona Entry is published it can have this diagram added to it. See the entry on Bootes on today's front page for the diagram.

I'll see can I get hold of a copy of the Almagest and see what Ptolemy himself said. That would be definitive, I presume.

According to that source, Crotos wasn't a centaur. Since Sag. is definitely seen as a centaur these days, it doesn't make much sense to say he is actually Crotos.
The Greeks inherited the constellations from the Babylonians anyway, and assigned their own myths to them, so there's no guaranteeing that they were consistent. If I found out anything more I'll let you know.

the article in wikipedia on satyrs has several illustrations, none of them look like sagittarius, but rather have manes and ears like horses.
