Dr Hell

This is a *very* nice Entry.

I hate to be the one to mention that, but... These are *western* wedding traditions. More specifically anglo-saxon wedding traditions. Even more specifically, Christian traditions. I think this should be reflected somewhere in the the Entry, or in the Entry's title.

Russian/Brazilian/German Jewish/Orthodox Christian traditions (at least these I can talk about) can be very different from the ones you present here.

I don't mean you should re-do everything. Just a small footnote somewhere, and I'm fine. This Entry is otherwise great smiley - winkeye

It's good luck if a chimney sweep kisses the bride as she comes out of the church. People now pay chimney sweeps to be attendance at teh time the wedding is to end.

As for the gifts to teh bride and groom I have a vague recollectino of this. I rememebr reading about it in a history lesson. It was the labourers who couldn't afford a dowry like the gentry. It was something to signify the new life of the newly weds. It also existed in Ireland as gifts for teh couple.

What about favours given by the bride to her guests at the reception? Or is this not common enough.

or you could just rename it "popular christian wedding.."...hang on they aren't necessarily christian because they're often done at hotel weddings etc. smiley - erm Well I'm sure you get the idea. Hell's right.

Re - the three gifts, latest news on that is that it's connected with Hogmanay, rather than newly weds.

Thanks Hell smiley - smiley

I don't really want to make the title longer than it already is smiley - erm I'll try to work out a way to fit what you suggested in somewhere.

Thanks Demon Drawer smiley - smiley

I'll see what I can find out about the chimney sweeps.

As a single (non-married) atheist, I'm only writing what I've researched, not experienced, and I hadn't realised that this was mostly Christian smiley - erm D'oh smiley - laugh

smiley - erm not yet, just been finding out about the chimney sweep - I couldn't get 'my head round' the idea that some who's possibly filthy dirty with soot, would be classed as lucky if they kissed a bride in a crisp white dress etc., I thought the only thing lucky about it would be if the dress was still white afterwardssmiley - laugh

Seems it's true (sorta) and I've found the origin too, I'll add it soon smiley - ok

Noticed I've missed a couple of other things out, smiley - doh

Okay this is looking very spick and span now! Well done. It has to hang around a few more days before I can send it up (the one week rule and all that), but I bag this one for sending off! And hopefully *fingers crossed* I'll get to edit it as well.

Oops - this conversation got lost in my old ones by mistake smiley - sorry, and look what's happened! smiley - smiley

Kat picked up most of what I'd noticed, but I've found the following:

Daughter's were then considered as their fathers property >
Daughters were then considered as their father's property (or possibly fathers' .. hmm, interesting one, that)

When the fathers' began to offer a dowry >
When the fathers began to offer a dowry

There seems to be a bit of plural/singular inconsistency in this section which makes placing the apostrophes trickier.

until they meet at the alter > altar

It appears to have lost it's last sentence at sometime >
It appears to have lost its last sentence at sometime (look, I'm not apostrophe obsessed, OK?)

King George 3rd > King George III

The wedding cake which symbolises union and allows the guests to share in the couples happiness > the couple's happiness

The top tier is set aside for the Christening of the couples first baby > the couple's first baby

whomever caught the bouquet > whoever

the bridge had best be sure > the bride smiley - biggrin

Not do so will bring her bad luck > Not to do so

smiley - erm Ok that was slightly more than I'd reckoned on. I still think it's a good entry, these are just teeny weeny tweaks. There are a few places where the punctuation or sentence construction needs altering a little but let's save that for Kat smiley - winkeye
