1869 The Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroad company presidents meet at Promontory Point, Utah to hammer in the ceremonial final spike thus completing the U.S. transcontinental railroad service.

1899 Fred Astaire Dancer and Film Star was born.

On 10 May:

The USS Nautilus copmleted the first ever underwater circumnavigation of the globe in 1960.

Wiston Churchhill replaced Chamberlain as Prime Minister of Britain in 1940.

The U.S. Continental Congress issued paper money for the first time in 1775.

Also in 1775, Colonel Ethan Allen was captured at Fort Ticonderoga in the American Revolutionary war.

The United States Transcontinental Railroad was completed at Promontory Point in 1869.

In 1789 Joseph Jeffries was the first European to die of smallpox in Australia - he was a sailor on HMS Supply in the Sydney colony. The disease spread and more than 1/2 the local Aboriginal population were killed. An outbreak in 1881 killed 40 people.

Smallpox is now considered to be eradicated (the last recorded natural case was in Somalia in 1977)- the only remaining stocks of the virus are kept by the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention.
