My first entry...and it's taken me almost exactly a year. Hmmm, doesn't bode well for me getting one of those sparkly researcher badges, does it?
The idea came from an entry in Flea Market, which was only a few lines and I've used none of it at all in my entry, but someone suggested the guide needed an entry on JANET so here it is!
Although it's my first entry, I've subbed a fair few so hopefully there aren't too many howlers.

It looks good. From a purely stylistic point of view, I'd put the definition of JANET after the first usage of the name, and I'd put the History section first - so that the entry flows from the past, through the present, and into the future.
But's well written nonetheless.

Thanks Geggs !
Re. the definition of JANET - there are a few theories about where the name came from, and no-one refers to it as anything but JANET, so I thought the expansion of the name wasn't that important. I don't think anyone would know what you were talking about if you mentioned the Joint Academic Network, whereas lots of people know JANET, so the expansion doesn't clarify anything really. It's more a historical nuggest of information.
Re. putting the History section first, I thought of that but couldn't find a way of doing it, because I wanted to explain what JANET was first, which leads onto stuff about SuperJANET and how the service is run. The History section wouldn't fit before a definition of what JANET is, so the only place it fitted was where it is now.
If you really don't think it works, I can take a look at it again, but I don't think it's too bad where it is.
Thanks for your comments

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Oct 7, 2005
Seems quite straightforward to me - does what it say on the tin.

Hi Kat and BH,
I thought I'd explained it as clearly as I could, but I'll take another look just to check - thanks.

I've changed 'network' to 'computer network' in the first line, hoping this makes it a bit clearer.

I guess, as someone who doesn't work or anything and as a school kid, I dont really get why schools would want to be on the network I suppose. That's not you writing it badly, that's just me.

Hi Kat,
It's about getting access to educational facilities such as Curriculum Online, online archives such as Pathe News, and being able to use services such as videoconferencing to learn from experts in other parts of the country or even the world. In the university and research sectors, it's also about sharing information, for example, allowing scientists to transfer large amounts of data at very high speeds across the network, allowing them to do cutting-edge, real-time experiments in physics, astronomy, meteorology etc.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

It is indeed! My first entry was an incrediably boring entry but I was still chuffed to bits when it got picked! In fact I still AM chuffed to bits every time an entry I've written or have even subbed is on the Front Page!
