Newbie is our term for somebody who is new to h2g2.
If you scroll down to the bottom of your reply box, you will see a selection of smilies. Just click on one and it will be added to your post. In addition, there is the 'Full Smiley Index' link, where you'll find all smileys you can use on this site. Alternatively, click on this link:

That's the guide ml version. To type a smiley in lain text, simply type < smiley > without the spaces.
