I am sure I saw a statement about using one's own pictures in guide entries at some point in the future. Am I imagining this or is it still the intent? If so, when?

It's very unlikely the BBC will allow this in the future. You can link to your own pictures though

We have no current plans to allow Researchers to upload their own pictures.
Have you seen the <./>GuideML-PictureLibrary</.>?

Having said which, how is it Researcher 96736, AKA Croz (overqualified and under experienced) manages to get his mug shot in lights???

Well, he attended an h2g2 meet up and his picture was taken and blobbed.
