It's given me a name of 'Researcher' plus a long number. That's a bit dull, isn't it?

Even changing the name in preferences does not work.
When I look at the whos online list, I'm still listed as a number.
When I change my Nickname, log out and log back in - I'm still listed as a number.
p.s. I touched my first pc in 1978 - so I am definitely not a newbie.
So, I must award this site, 'webshyte of the week' for failing to retain me as a user.

Well, your posting shows your name and not the number. I really hope that you would like to stick around for a small while before giving up on this particular site.
Perhaps the caching in the servers just had not caught up with your update. I am reading this 21 minutes after your post.

The name changes do sometimes take a long time to update. I have seen pages in which the same users name is different in 2 places on the same page, don't try to tell me *that*'s a feature.
