Are there any more out there, who like me, are sick and tired of news items depicting childerns injuries as a result of the act of using the atomic bomb to end the war in the Far East. For one who had just finished one, after 4 1/2 years of fighting, I and millions of other like me,then earmarked for tranfer to the Far East. Standing a street corner in Bari,Italy, on that dy 1945 I literaly breathed a sigh of relief, when I heard that the bomb had been dropped.
What alternatives were there? To invade the mainland with its consequent loss of millions, military and civilian casualties, far exceeding those who died at Nagasaki and Hirshima?
Or to just sit and wait under a total brockade, while the Japaneses slowly strarved to death, don't forget that would also include the hundreds of thousands of POWs. Only those of military age in 1945 need bother to reply.

Hi adrose,

I see you mainly use the WW2 site so welcome to h2g2.

There are a few places on h2g2 that are set up for stimulating and serious discussion.

The Forum at A1146917 and <./>Askh2g2</.> are 2 of them.

If you repost your points there then someone is more likely to respond to them, as this is more of an information for users page.

You may have posted this on h2g2 accidently - if so then you may want to repost it on WW2

I am only 35 - but that is still old enough to have known people who lived through the wars.

I think it is easy for us to look back now and see how horrific the bombing was - but then so was everything about war (and that is still true today). At the time, the way a war was fought and the ideology behind it was very different.

In fact I was only discussing this yesterday with a friend after watching the BBC Dunkirk series.

One example of the change is that we no longer fight a 'country' but we fight a 'faction' or 'extremist militant'.

However it is easy for my generation (and even easier for the current youngsters) to sit and philosophize about the evil of Enola Gay. But this life is a world away from the world at that time and nothing is black and white.

Anyway,

Best wishes

mort
