My current mouse mat is in the throes of this condition, probably hinting that it's time for it to taken off to the mouse mat glue factory.
For many years, I had an Amiga on a desk with a textured surface, and I didn't use a mouse mat. After several years of use, the patch under the mouse was completely bald.
